Austin Trauma Therapist: Struggling with Uncontrollable Emotions?

You’re snapping at the people you love. Lost it on some stranger at the store. You hardly even recognize yourself anymore. You just don’t know how it got this bad.

The Feeling of Being Broken and Unsafe

You feel broken and crazy. You know you’re safe but you never feel safe. You always thought that good things happened to good people and bad things happened to bad people. Then something bad happened to you (or someone you love) and you just can’t stop reliving it. And you feel like it was your fault.

The Impact of Trauma on Your Life

First, it was the flashbacks, the nightmares, thinking about it when you didn’t want to. Then you noticed the way you viewed yourself, others, and the world had really changed.

Losing Trust in Yourself and Others

You thought you could trust yourself but now you’re not so sure. You definitely don’t trust others. You feel powerless, worthless, and disconnected from the world.

The Coping Mechanism: Avoidance

So you avoid. Don’t think about it. Don’t talk about it. Don’t feel. And it worked for a while. Until it didn’t. You know you can’t go on like this but you have no idea what to do.

There is Hope: Help from an Austin Trauma Therapist

Hi! I’m Jessica and I’m an Austin trauma therapist. I’m trained and experienced in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which is a gold standard and evidence-based treatment for PTSD. It’s 12 sessions, structured, and involves homework. Many of my clients no longer have PTSD by the end. They feel lighter, stronger, alive again.

Overcoming Trauma: A Metaphor for Healing

I like the metaphor of a linen closet. Someone wrecked your closet. They ripped off the door, threw stuff everywhere, then left you to clean up the mess. So you grabbed everything, shoved it back in the closet, and hurried up and closed the door before it fell back out. And thought you were over it.

The Emotional Toll of Trauma

PTSD symptoms creep in when you are bored, trying to relax, or trying to fall asleep. So you stop relaxing. Don’t sleep. Just kept going and going and going to keep the memories at bay.

Then you start getting really irritated with people. Can’t focus on anything. Spacing out. And jumping out of your skin at every little thing.

The Healing Process: Opening the Closet

Eventually, you need something out of that closet. So you crack the door open but quickly shut it again because it’s all going to come tumbling out. So you’re just stuck. And your world has gotten smaller and smaller.
We are going to open that closet. It will be messy for a bit. But I will systematically help you put everything back where it belongs so that you have a functioning (metaphorical) closet.

Frequently Asked Questions for an Austin Trauma Therapist

  • Psychotherapy is the most effective intervention for PTSD. Medications can help mitigate symptoms but won't completely address the issue. The American Psychological Association's Clinical Practice Guidelines strongly recommend Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE) and conditionally recommend Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

As an Austin trauma therapist, I am trained in and offer Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT.)

  • Believe it or not, yes! As an Austin trauma therapist offering CPT, I use a tool called the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5 for short.) Scores range from 0-80 and anything above a 33 indicates a possible PTSD diagnosis. Many, if not most, people who I work wit as an Austin trauma therapist drop below 33. Some drop well below 33. Research has followed people as far out as 5 years and shown that PTSD did not return.

  • Exposure to actual or threatened death, exposure to actual or threatened bodily injury, and/or sexual violence.

Someone can develop PTSD if one of these types of events happens directly to them, if they see it happen to someone else, if they learn about it happening to a loved one, or if they have repeated exposure through their job.

As an Austin trauma therapist, I have guided many with these experiences to relief and healing.
