Radically Open DBT in Austin: Finding Flexibility and Connection
Jessica Fink, LCSW-S offers Radically Open DBT in Austin
Imagine this scenario
You’re at an office Christmas party. There are games. This game is to see how many words you can make out of the letters in the word Christmas. Someone sets a timer and you are furiously writing. Time’s up. Add up your words. Everyone else adds theirs. Your score is average. Average?!! Ugh. You don’t want to be average. Then you’re a little embarrassed that it’s impacting you so much. It’s just a game at a party.
“Why do I always make the stakes so high?” you think to yourself.
But you do this with everything. People are constantly telling you that you are too serious and need to lighten up. Learn how to relax and have a little fun. Doesn’t sound hard but you can’t seem to get there.
You’re Highly Effective, But It’s Holding You Back
You have no problem being effective.
So long as effective means striving, achieving results, doing the right thing, and working hard. When in doubt, apply more self-control. It works in some contexts. It’s not all bad. This trait has helped you succeed in a lot of areas of your life.
Do others tell you you are wound too tight? Wish you could learn how to loosen the grip without everything completely falling apart? Reach out today to schedule a free 15-minute consult for Radically Open DBT in Austin.
And it’s hampering you in others.
The Consequences of Overcontrol in Your Life
You’ve missed good opportunities because of being overly cautious and hesitant to try new things.
You have trouble connecting with others out of wanting to get the interaction just right. The less structured the activity, the more uncomfortable you are.
You have difficulty relaxing, having fun, being silly. You get stuff done but there is absolutely no joy.
No one has any idea how miserable you are or how much you’re suffering. You look like you have it all together. Everyone assumes you’re fine. You say you’re fine. You’re not fine.
At the same time, you hate being asked how you’re feeling. You don’t know how you’re feeling and you don’t like being the center of attention.
You overanalyze and overplan and then get overwehelmed and stuck when things don’t go as expected.

What if life could be lighter, easier…flowier? Is that a word? Radically Open DBT in Austin can get you there. Reach out today to schedule your free 15-minute consult.
Being overcontrolled is not inherently a bad thing. Overcontrolled people keep the world running on time and are good at anticipating future problems. It becomes maladaptive when it interferes with your quality of life. Maladaptive overcontrol can maintain and even exacerbate things like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Loneliness is a common experience of overcontrolled people. Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RODBT) was designed to treat maladaptive overcontrol. See my blog for more about maladaptive overcontrol.
The Goal of Radically Open DBT
Overcontrol is good until it isn’t.
I come in to address the “until it isn’t” piece of that. The goal is not to take away all of your overcontrol. It’s to figure out where it has become maladaptive and dial it back just a little. Think of loosening the grip rather than completely letting go.
I offer group and individual Radically Open DBT (RODBT) in Austin. This is different from standard DBT. Go here to learn more about how they are different.
Radically Open DBT in Austin helps you to handle change better, feel more connected to others, tolerate uncertainty, and enjoy life more.

RODBT spun off from DBT and the developer of RODBT was previously a DBT therapist. But they are quite different.
DBT addresses maladaptive undercontrol while RODBT addresses maladaptive overcontrol. Most people are flexibly controlled and lean toward under- or overcontrol. And then there are some that lean far enough into either end of that distribution that it becomes a problem.

Because loneliness and disconnection are common experiences of the maladaptively overcontrolled, a group is a great format for this treatment.
The group will feel more like a class than what you might imagine of a therapy group. In fact, protocol is to call it class rather than group. It’s structured with a set curriculum and homework. The primary goal is to learn skills. But within that frame, there is the opportunity for the experience of community with similar people.
The class is 30 weeks and is ongoing. People can join at any time and attend until they come back around to wherever it was in the manual that they started.
People who complete my Radically Open DBT in Austin skills class say their relationships improve, they feel less lonely, and they are better able to adapt to changes in their environment.
Skills class meets Wednesday 3-4:30 pm.

Radically Open DBT defines psychological health as involving three features:
Being open and receptive to new ideas and experiences.
Being able to adapt to changes in your environment
Feeling connected to at least one other person
Radical openness is the core skill in RODBT. Radical openness does not mean being 100% open to everything all the time. It’s about modulating the openness, flexibly and according to the situation. The most well-adjusted among us are able to learn, adapt and connect.
It is time to find the joy and connection.
